ICE Records Highest Monthly Arrest Total in Agency History

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a record-breaking number of arrests in July 2026 as part of a summer enforcement surge under the administration of Donald Trump. Federal sources reported approximately 51,000 arrests, though CBS News cited a lower figure of 46,000. This follows a record of 43,000 arrests in June. The surge is attributed to new funding from two reconciliation bills, the end of a Department of Homeland Security shutdown, and the removal of Temporary Protected Status for 300,000 Haitian migrants.

Internal documents indicate the Department of Homeland Security is currently arresting an average of 1,500 individuals daily across American communities. As of late July, approximately 68,000 people were held in ICE detention, nearing a previous record of 70,000 set in January. These operations included expanded nationwide efforts, including more than 30 arrests at airports to reverse policies that previously allowed undocumented immigrants to travel domestically by air.

While the administration views these actions as a dismantling of Biden-era leniency, some allies, including Mike Howell of the Oversight Project, argue the scale of enforcement remains disproportionately low relative to the number of illegal immigrants in the country. Meanwhile, immigration attorneys claim some detainees lack criminal records and hold valid work authorizations or parole documents.
