Mark Carney and Lorne Doerkson Align on B.C. Economic Growth
Prime Minister Mark Carney and B.C. premier-designate Lorne Doerkson agreed to collaborate on infrastructure and energy investment following a Conservative majority victory.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia premier-designate Lorne Doerkson held a virtual meeting on Tuesday to coordinate economic strategies following a provincial election on Saturday. The discussions focused on establishing Canada as an energy superpower by maximizing private investment in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), building infrastructure, and addressing trade risks.
Doerkson, representing the Conservative Party of British Columbia, which won two-thirds of the seats to secure a majority government, stated that he and Carney are aligned on the need to attract investment and create high-paying jobs. A readout from the Prime Minister's Office confirmed an agreement to work together to increase growth for both the province and the country.
While the new government prepares to take office, the New Democratic Party is reorganizing after its election loss. Party leader David Eby resigned on Saturday after calling a snap election two years early. The NDP caucus is scheduled to meet Thursday to select an interim leader and establish a process for a future leadership race.
