India and European Union Conclude Free Trade Agreement Talks

India and the European Union concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement after 25 years of talks to create a single economic space.

India and the European Union have concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), ending a diplomatic process that spanned 25 years. S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, described 2026 as the "Europe Year" for India, noting that the deal provides access to a mature market with significant purchasing power.

While Jaishankar expressed hope that the agreement would enter into force by the end of 2026 or early 2027, European Union Ambassador Jean-Eric Paquet clarified the timeline. Paquet stated the goal is to conclude the agreement by the end of 2026 and bring it into force during 2027. He characterized the FTA as an "absolute game changer" and indicated it may be accompanied by an Investment Protection Agreement.

Jaishankar emphasized that India's engagement with Brussels is independent of formal alliances and aligns with the country's pursuit of strategic autonomy within a multipolar world.
