Senegal Condemns U.S. Sanctions Against ICC Officials
The government of Senegal expressed deep concern after the United States sanctioned ICC prosecutor Abdoulaye Seye and President Tomoko Akane.
The government of Senegal declared full solidarity with Abdoulaye Seye after the United States imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court official and ICC President Tomoko Akane. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures on August 19, 2026, alleging that the officials attempted to investigate or prosecute nationals of countries that had not consented to the jurisdiction of the court.
Senegal's Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad warned that these sanctions risk undermining the integrity of international criminal justice. The move follows a broader U.S. strategy initiated by the State Department on July 13 to degrade the operational capacity of the ICC to prevent legal actions against U.S. government officials or service members.
