Trump Administration Imposes Export Ban on Anthropic AI Models

The Trump administration banned foreign access to Anthropic's Mythos and Fable 5 models, citing national security risks and potential cyberweapon capabilities.

The Trump administration imposed an export ban on Anthropic's most advanced AI models, Mythos and Fable 5, after designating them as national security risks. On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a directive requiring Anthropic to suspend access to these models for all foreign nationals. The government cited a reported jailbreak that could allow the models to be used as cyber weapons, specifically for identifying software vulnerabilities.

In response, Anthropic disabled access to the models for all customers to ensure compliance, though the company maintained that the vulnerabilities were minor and common across the industry. This action followed a prior conflict where the Department of Defense blacklisted Anthropic as a supply chain risk due to disagreements over military guardrail modifications. David Sacks, a Trump adviser and former White House AI czar, defended the severity of the jailbreak.

President Donald Trump recently stated that negotiations with Anthropic are progressing well and indicated he no longer views the company as a national security threat. However, the move sparked criticism from legal experts and researchers who argued the government's ad hoc regulatory approach lacks transparency. Yann LeCun, former chief AI scientist at Meta, suggested the ban was a consequence of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's frequent public warnings regarding AI risks.
