Prabowo Subianto Willing to Visit North Korea to Open Dialogue

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced on July 31 that he is willing to visit North Korea to initiate diplomatic dialogue. Speaking during a meeting with chambers of commerce and industry in Jakarta, Prabowo revealed that South Korean President Lee Jae Myung made the request during Prabowo's visit to Seoul in April, where the leaders also discussed defense cooperation and energy security.

Prabowo cited Indonesia's non-aligned foreign policy and its principle of not interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries as key assets for mediation. He pointed to Indonesia's role in the Myanmar conflict as a precedent for its ability to maintain acceptable relations with opposing parties. This openness to mediation follows previous indications from Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono that Prabowo was also open to mediating the Iran war.

The office of President Lee responded by stating that nations with friendly ties to both Seoul and Pyongyang can play a constructive role in fostering peaceful coexistence on the Korean peninsula. These efforts to revive engagement come amid high tensions; North Korea designated South Korea as a hostile nation in 2024 and has rebuffed previous attempts by Lee to ease relations.
