Trump Pressures Tech Firms to Offset AI Data Center Costs

President Donald Trump announced that his administration will pressure Silicon Valley companies to ensure the expansion of AI data centers does not increase electricity costs for residents. The move addresses growing bipartisan opposition to the financial and environmental impacts of these facilities, which require massive amounts of power and water.

In coordination with the administration's shift, Microsoft announced five policy pledges on January 13, 2026. These commitments include replenishing water supplies, avoiding property tax breaks, and ensuring that data centers do not drive up local electricity rates for neighboring communities.

Opposition to the AI build-out has spanned the political spectrum, from conservative activists in Oklahoma to progressive groups such as the NAACP and Democratic Socialists of America. Senator Bernie Sanders has called for a moratorium on new construction, while Senator Elizabeth Warren is investigating the link between data center growth and rising energy prices. A report from 10a Labs' Data Center Watch found that community backlash derailed 20 projects valued at $98 billion between April and June of the previous year.
