Irish Foreign Minister Calls for Northern Ireland Reunification Prep

Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee stated that Ireland must prepare for a potential border poll to determine if Northern Ireland should reunify with the Republic. Speaking in Wicklow, McEntee asserted her belief that such a vote will occur at some stage, provided a majority in Northern Ireland supports the move.

This position contrasts with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who recently declared that conversations regarding unification are "off the table," comparing the prospect to the Brexit referendum. While support for unification is reportedly growing among younger voters, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin expressed skepticism, stating the current appetite for a poll is not strong enough.

Under the Good Friday Agreement, the UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland can only call a vote when it appears likely that a majority would support reunification. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband affirmed the United Kingdom's continued support for the agreement.
