European Gas Prices Hit Four-Year High Amid Iran Tensions

European natural gas prices surged above 100 euros per megawatt-hour as low winter inventories coincided with reports of potential U.S. military action against Iran.

European natural gas prices reached a four-year high on Friday, with the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark peaking at 103.10 euros per megawatt-hour. Prices have climbed approximately 40% this month and 256% for the year, driven by a combination of geopolitical instability and critically low energy reserves.

Donald Trump reviewed military options targeting Iran, including the possibility of renewed major combat operations and a continued naval blockade, following a briefing from Admiral Brad Cooper. While Vice President JD Vance has engaged in backchannel talks with Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei to explore de-escalation, President Trump stated that "anything's possible" regarding military expansion after the November 3 midterm elections. Traders fear these tensions could halt liquefied natural gas traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Supply concerns are exacerbated by storage levels falling to 75%, the lowest seasonal level since recordkeeping began in 2011. Germany's inventories are particularly low, sitting below 62%, prompting criticism from Italian officials. Klaus Müller of Germany's Federal Network Agency acknowledged the low levels but noted progress in diversifying energy sources.

Financial analysts warn that Europe is effectively betting on a warm winter to avoid a severe price shock. BlackRock estimates that energy shocks have already reduced Europe's GDP by 0.5%. Peter Taylor of Macquarie Group warned that a cold winter could force Europe to compete with Asia for supplies, noting that the region needs unseasonable warmth to make it through unscathed.
