The Israel Defense Forces detained an Egyptian national early Tuesday after the individual breached the border fence in the Nitzana area. Military surveillance systems detected the suspect, who was apprehended and taken for questioning. The military stated it views the incident with severity and continues to maintain a high level of defensive readiness while investigating the breach.
This incident follows a pattern of security challenges along the Egyptian border. On August 3, security forces intercepted a smuggling cell transporting weapons, drugs, and a large drone. In September 2025, a vehicle chase involving suspected drone smugglers resulted in the death of one suspect.
In response to these escalating threats, Defense Minister Israel Katz designated the border area a closed military zone and adjusted the rules of engagement. Katz stated that anyone entering the prohibited area will be harmed.
