George Akume Denies Nigeria is Pursuing One-Party State

Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume denied that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is attempting to establish a one-party state. In a statement released Wednesday, Akume affirmed the government's commitment to the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and political pluralism.

To support this claim, Akume cited the Independent National Electoral Commission's registration of 21 political parties. The statement followed a meeting between President Tinubu and the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. According to Akume, the discussions with the bishops focused on religious freedom, education, public services, security, and economic hardship.

Akume emphasized that the administration remains open to honest counsel and intends to continue collaborating with civil society, the private sector, and faith-based organizations to address national challenges.
