Angela Rayner Admits Slim Chance of Meeting Housing Target

Communities Secretary Angela Rayner acknowledged that the government has only a "slim chance" of meeting its manifesto pledge to build 1.5 million homes by the next election. Rayner described the goal as a "stretch target," citing inflation and rising construction costs linked to the war between the United States and Iran as primary obstacles.

To address the housing shortage, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a £10 billion social and affordable homes programme. This initiative focuses on council housing and will support 70,000 homes outside London, with roughly 60% designated as social rented houses.

Ministers are also exploring planning reforms to stimulate private sector growth. This includes a proposed "default yes" approach for housing developments situated near well-connected tram and train stations.
