U.S. Budget Deficit Hits $1.993 Trillion for Fiscal Year

The Congressional Budget Office reports a 12% increase in the U.S. budget deficit, driven largely by rising interest costs on public debt.

The Congressional Budget Office reported that the U.S. budget deficit rose to $1.993 trillion for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026. This figure represents a 12% increase over 2025 levels and is expected to surpass 6% of gross domestic product.

Rising interest costs on $32 trillion in public debt drove the increase, totaling more than $1.1 trillion and accounting for over half of the deficit's growth. While the Trump administration and Republican-led Congress reduced the federal workforce and curtailed some tax breaks, these efforts were offset by extended tax cuts, expanded immigration-enforcement spending, and a Supreme Court ruling that limited tariff revenue and forced government refunds.

Fiscal disagreements have intensified ahead of the midterm elections. President Donald Trump has proposed increased military spending and $5,000 checks for adult citizens. Conversely, Democrats are advocating for higher taxes on corporations and high-income households to address the fiscal trend. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has set a target to reduce deficits to 3% of GDP.
