Trump Administration Prepares Polysilicon Tariffs to Counter China

The Trump administration is preparing to implement a price floor and impose tariffs on polysilicon and related products. This move follows a year-long national security investigation by the United States Department of Commerce under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, with a final decision expected later in August 2026.

The measures aim to diminish the dominance of the Government of China, which currently controls approximately 80% of global solar manufacturing capacity. By reducing reliance on Chinese imports, the administration intends to protect domestic producers such as Hemlock Semiconductor Operations and Wacker Chemie and strengthen U.S. capabilities in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Industry groups and manufacturers have warned that these protections may increase costs for consumer electronics, automobiles, and solar power plants, potentially leading to project failures. The Government of China has urged the U.S. to cease the Section 232 measures and resolve concerns through equal dialogue.
