JD Vance and Kamala Harris Lead Early 2028 Polls
Vice President JD Vance and former Vice President Kamala Harris emerge as early front-runners in polling for the 2028 U.S. presidential election.
Early polling and Federal Election Commission filings indicate that JD Vance and Kamala Harris are the current front-runners for the 2028 United States presidential election. A FocalData poll of 2,553 adults conducted in early October 2026 shows Vance leading the potential Republican primary field with nearly 40% support, followed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Governor Ron DeSantis.
On the Democratic side, former Vice President Kamala Harris leads with 32% support, ahead of California Governor Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While Ocasio-Cortez has not ruled out a run for the presidency or the Senate, Senator Jon Ossoff has explicitly rejected a 2028 bid. Marco Rubio has also played down his prospects, stating he has "no plans at this time" to run.
The political landscape remains fluid as over 100 individuals have submitted candidate statements to the FEC, though no major candidate has launched a formal campaign. Concurrent polling shows President Donald Trump with a 33% approval rating, while generic Democratic candidates currently hold a six-point advantage over generic Republicans among all respondents.
