Global Governments Boost Nuclear Power to Meet AI Energy Demand
Governments worldwide are investing billions in nuclear energy and reactor deployment to support artificial intelligence data centers and reduce reliance on Russian uranium.
Donald Trump signed executive orders to quadruple U.S. nuclear power capacity as part of a broader global effort to meet soaring electricity demands driven by artificial intelligence data centers. To support this expansion and reduce a 40% global reliance on Russian enriched uranium, the U.S. government partnered with Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management to invest $80 billion in the deployment of Westinghouse nuclear reactors. This initiative follows the 2024 passage of the ADVANCE Act, which streamlined reactor construction in the United States.
International efforts are mirroring this shift toward nuclear energy. The United Kingdom is investing 18 billion British pounds to initiate a new era of nuclear power, while the European Union approved 14.2 billion euros to finance Poland's first nuclear plant. Additionally, Japan and China have begun constructing new reactors.
The transition is further accelerated by the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, which will take full force in 2028. This legislation forces a strategic shift toward alternative suppliers, such as Canada-based Cameco, to ensure energy security and stability in the global supply chain.
