Iran Offers to Mediate Saudi Arabia and Yemen Conflict
Iran has offered to mediate a peaceful resolution between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, arguing that 12 years of military action have failed to end the conflict.
The Government of Iran has offered to mediate a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, provided both parties request its assistance. Speaking at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s foreign ministers’ summit in Baghdad, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that 12 years of conflict proved there is no military solution and advocated for an inclusive political process as the only sustainable path to peace.
This diplomatic overture follows a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi energy facilities and Riyadh's international airport that left 13 people dead last week. While Saudi Arabia has accused Tehran of encouraging these escalations, Iranian officials have categorically rejected those claims, asserting that Yemeni armed forces act independently based on their own interests.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei further argued that air and naval blockades imposed on Yemen by the United States and the United Kingdom have failed to solve the dispute. Iran maintains that any sustainable resolution requires the lifting of all blockades and respect for Yemen's national sovereignty. Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh noted that Saudi Arabia has not yet responded to the mediation offer.
