House Democrats Propose Sanctions and Aid Cuts for Israel

Democratic members of the U.S. Congress are pushing to cut military aid and impose sanctions on Israel over civilian deaths in Gaza.

Support for Israel is declining among Democratic members of the U.S. Congress, driven by high civilian casualties in Gaza and opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This shift aligns with sentiment among younger and progressive voters, with recent polling showing significant opposition to continued economic and military assistance.

In response, nearly half of House Democrats have voted to cut off aid. Party leaders are now calling for a fundamental reset of the U.S.-Israeli relationship, which includes a review of the expiring 10-year security aid memorandum. Senator Chuck Schumer has publicly condemned Netanyahu and called for new Israeli leadership.

To further pressure the Israeli government, top Democrats in the House and Senate have proposed legislation to impose sanctions on Israel for settlement construction. These proposed measures specifically target banks and companies associated with the construction of settlements.
