India and EU Lead P4M Initiative to Reform UN

The Government of India and the European Union co-chaired the launch of the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity (P4M) initiative on September 21, 2026, in New York. Alongside co-sponsors Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, and Kenya, the group adopted the Declaration of the Partners for Multilateralism during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week.

The signatories committed to reforming the United Nations and other multilateral institutions through the UN80 initiative to increase representation and effectiveness. The group expressed concern over growing geopolitical polarization, power politics, and the weaponization of economic interdependence. They pledged to uphold the United Nations Charter, the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Priority areas for the P4M initiative include addressing the fuel, food, fertilizer, and finance crisis, strengthening global supply chains, and regulating artificial intelligence. The group also pledged cooperation on biodiversity loss, pollution, and the climate emergency. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that supporting multilateral cooperation is not sufficient and must be effectively implemented to ensure global security.
