Cloud Giants Commit Over $850 Billion to AI Data Centers

Major cloud computing companies have increased future data center lease commitments to over $850 billion to support expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Major cloud computing providers have raised their total future data center lease commitments to over $850 billion, signaling a long-term surge in demand for semiconductors and energy to power artificial intelligence. These financial obligations, scheduled for payout over the next two decades, are driven by the rapid scaling of AI server farms.

Meta Platforms Inc. emerged as the most aggressive spender in the most recent quarter, adding $79 billion in new commitments to reach a total of $182.9 billion as of March 31. Microsoft Corp. added more than $41 billion, bringing its total commitments to $196.6 billion. In a related expansion, Microsoft partnered with Chevron Corp. to develop a new server farm project in west Texas.

Oracle Corp. continues to hold the highest total in future spending commitments despite experiencing a slight decline this quarter. Amazon.com Inc. also increased its footprint by adding $10 billion in new leases during the same period.
