Tom Homan Defends Haitian Deportations and ICE Conduct

Border Czar Tom Homan defended the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies during an August 30, 2026, appearance on CNN's State of the Union. Homan specifically justified the deportation of hundreds of Haitian immigrants following the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 individuals. He argued that the administration is executing lawful court orders and fulfilling President Donald Trump's promise to enforce immigration law, regardless of the dire humanitarian crisis and gang violence currently affecting Haiti.

During the interview, Homan rejected New York Times reports alleging that ICE officers used excessive force against deportees on a flight to Liberia. While he noted that Internal Affairs would investigate the claims, he countered that threats against ICE officers have increased by over 9,000%. He further denied claims that ICE intended to terrorize children during arrests at school bus stops in Connecticut, dismissing such reports as political statements.

To increase transparency in officer decision-making, Homan expressed support for deploying body cameras for ICE field officers. He maintained that the removals of individuals ordered by judges must proceed to send a deterrent signal that the border is closed.
