Democrats Plan Trump Administration Investigations After Retaking House

House Democrats prepare a series of impeachments and oversight investigations into President Donald Trump and his cabinet after winning control of the House of Representatives.

Democratic lawmakers are preparing an aggressive legislative and oversight agenda for January after retaking control of the House of Representatives. House Democrats intend to launch investigations into President Donald Trump, focusing on presidential pardons, government contracting, and cryptocurrency deals involving the Trump family. Representative Jamie Raskin identified these as primary targets, while Representative Robert Garcia, the expected chair of the House Oversight Committee, signaled the shift by posting the message "Lawyer up."

Internal working groups have identified cabinet secretary Pete Hegseth as a primary target for impeachment. Other oversight targets include the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and figures such as Elon Musk, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Todd Blanche. While Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer supports "corruption investigations," he appears less eager than some colleagues to pursue a third impeachment trial against Trump.

Legislatively, Democrats plan to use their first 100 hours to reinstate health insurance subsidies, reverse Medicaid cuts, and undo Trump's tariffs. They also intend to vote on legislation regarding the war in Iran. Parallel to these efforts, some members are pushing for an ethics reform package to ban stock trading for government officials and limit super PAC spending. Internally, the party faces friction as Representative Haley Stevens faces demands for expulsion from the Democratic caucus after voting against Abdul El-Sayed.
