US Stocks Fall as Treasury Yields Hit 20-Year High

US stocks declined Tuesday as Treasury yields reached their highest levels since 2002, driven by oil price volatility and the ongoing war with Iran.

US stocks declined Tuesday as Treasury yields climbed to their highest levels in over two decades. The 10-year Treasury note yield rose to between 5.23% and 5.28%, a peak not seen since 2002 or 2007. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 295 points and the S&P 500 dropped 0.3%, though technology stocks such as Nvidia and Broadcom provided some support.

Market instability is driven by volatile oil prices and inflation concerns stemming from the ongoing war between the United States and Iran. While Brent crude eased to $96.95 a barrel, prices remain significantly higher than before the US and Israel attacked Iran in February. Donald Trump, President of the United States, recently rejected a proposal from Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy shipping route currently disrupted by the conflict.

Economic indicators further pressured the market, with consumer confidence hitting a 12-year low and August job openings declining to 7.08 million. Investors are now awaiting the personal consumption expenditures index and a September employment report to gauge inflation trends. These reports will inform a projected interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve System in October, following recent rate increases intended to combat inflation.
