Atiku Abubakar Urges National Assembly to Block Tinubu Loans

Atiku Abubakar urged the National Assembly to suspend approval of over $21 billion in external loans requested by President Bola Tinubu due to transparency concerns.

Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar urged the National Assembly to suspend the consideration of President Bola Tinubu's request to borrow $20.52 billion and €1.045 billion in external loans. Abubakar argues that the Federal Government has failed to provide project-by-project details, including costs, locations, and contractors, which he claims exposes the funds to political manipulation and abuse ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abubakar specifically linked the borrowing to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. He maintained that the National Assembly should not approve the request until the administration provides full disclosure of loan terms and repayment obligations to ensure the borrowing serves the public interest rather than political agendas.

Warning both the legislature and international lenders, Abubakar stated that any loans obtained without strict adherence to constitutional and due-process requirements would be scrutinized and challenged if he assumes office.
