Incoming PM Andy Burnham Plans £38 Billion Tax Hikes
Incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham plans £38 billion in tax increases to fund a progressive spending agenda and transfer wealth to northern England.
Andy Burnham, the incoming British Prime Minister and former Mayor of Manchester, is reportedly planning to implement up to £38 billion in additional tax hikes. These measures aim to fund a progressive spending agenda and facilitate the transfer of wealth from London to the north of England and other deprived regions. Potential targets for the increases include capital gains rates, estate taxes, and National Insurance taxes on rental income.
An analysis by the Reform UK party suggests that when combined with existing taxes from the Sir Keir Starmer administration, the total Labour tax increases could reach approximately £104 billion. Reform UK argues that Burnham lacks an electoral mandate for these policies because he is ascending to the premiership following a special by-election in Makerfield rather than a general election.
Robert Jenrick, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer for Reform UK, has challenged Burnham to explicitly rule out the specific proposed taxes. Reform UK continues to call for a general election in response to the planned fiscal shift.
