Federal Judges Rule Against Trump in 75 First Amendment Cases

Federal judges have ruled against the administration of Donald Trump in 75 cases, concluding that the government infringed on First Amendment rights. The rulings come despite a January 2025 inaugural promise by the president to end government censorship.

Courts found the administration illegally detained and deported foreign students and faculty for pro-Palestinian advocacy and terminated university grants for institutions that refused to align with the president's ideological agenda. Additionally, the government targeted the law firm Perkins Coie by suspending the security clearances of its lawyers due to the firm's work for political opponents.

The administration has successfully overturned or paused 15 of these rulings on appeal, including a victory regarding federal workers' union bargaining rights. However, other courts have upheld findings of viewpoint discrimination. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson defended the president, characterizing the judicial rulings as unlawful obstructions of the American people's election choices.
