U.S. Gasoline Prices Hit Record August Highs Amid Iran Conflict

National gasoline prices in the United States have reached unprecedented levels for late August, with the average exceeding $4 per gallon. Diesel prices have similarly spiked to approximately $5.40 per gallon, significantly higher than the previous year's rates of $3.20 for gas and $3.70 for diesel. These record seasonal highs coincide with U.S. gasoline inventories falling to their lowest levels since November 2025.

The price surge is primarily driven by a conflict between the Federal government of the United States and Iran, which has resulted in a naval blockade and intermittent strikes that have choked oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz for over five months. This waterway typically handles 20% of global oil shipments. Additionally, sustained drone attacks by Ukraine against Russian refineries have further constrained global crude supplies and inflated diesel costs.

The U.S. Department of Energy has revised its forecasts upward, projecting gasoline to average $4 per gallon for the third quarter and diesel to remain near $5 through the end of the year. While Iran and Oman indicate they are nearing an agreement to reopen the strait, analysts warn that limited refining capacity caused by wars in Europe and the Middle East may keep pump prices high even if crude prices drop.

President Donald Trump has criticized the oil industry for these costs, but analysts suggest prices will remain elevated until a lasting deal is reached with Tehran. These cost-of-living pressures are expected to become a significant issue for voters ahead of the November mid-term elections.
