Generational Protests Spread Across Europe Over Social Contract

Younger Europeans are protesting across five countries to demand affordable housing, economic security, and functioning public services amid a perceived breakdown of the social contract.

A wave of generational protests has spread across Europe, with significant demonstrations in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Albania. While national triggers vary, the movements converge around a shared frustration with economic insecurity and the inability of governments to provide basic public services.

In France, Emmanuel Macron faced protests from approximately half a million people citing the rising cost of living and crumbling classrooms. Macron dismissed attempts by right-wing voices to link the unrest to migration, stating that the "unbridled violence" seen on the fringes of the demonstrations was carried out by French citizens.

Other European nations report similar unrest driven by specific local crises. In Spain and Portugal, protesters established tent camps and held rallies in Lisbon and Porto to fight soaring housing costs, with Portuguese prices doubling between 2015 and 2024. In Italy, demonstrations in Milan targeted deep economic inequalities, while students in Tirana, Albania, protested a proposed resort project.

Labor leaders have called for immediate government action to resolve the deadlock. Sophie Binet, Secretary General of the CGT union, argued that the only way to exit the crisis is for the government to respond to the demands of the protesters.
