FAA Investigates Marine One Separation Incident at Reagan Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a potential safety violation that occurred on August 4, 2026, near Reagan National Airport. A commercial jet was permitted to take off while Marine One, transporting Donald Trump from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base, was approaching the airport. The incident appears to violate safety protocols established after a January 2025 midair collision that killed 67 people, which requires all takeoffs and landings to halt when a helicopter passes.

The FAA reported a momentary loss of separation between the two aircraft, though it noted they were not on a collision course. The White House and the United States Marine Corps denied that any danger existed, asserting that the flight movement was routine and the pilots were highly skilled.
