Pakistan Government Weighs Emergency Rule Amid PTI Long March

The Government of Pakistan is considering emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the PTI continues a long march to demand Imran Khan's release.

The Government of Pakistan is weighing the imposition of governor's rule or a state of emergency in 12 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including former Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military officials are reviewing security reports to determine if constitutional Articles 232 to 234 should be invoked. While the government links this potential move to a lack of counter-terrorism cooperation from the provincial administration, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Law Minister Aftab Alam has dismissed these claims as a conspiracy to portray the province as sympathetic to anti-state forces.

This escalation coincides with a long march organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) toward Islamabad to demand the release of founder Imran Khan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered dialogue on the condition that the march be abandoned, a demand the PTI has rejected as the convoy moved from Peshawar toward Charsadda. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, has urged the PTI to abandon extremist politics and return to parliamentary dialogue.

Efforts to resolve the deadlock have stalled. Maulana Fazlur Rehman of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has offered to mediate but has set five conditions to test the seriousness of both parties. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has directed opposition leaders to halt all government talks until a meeting with Imran Khan is secured.
