Trump Claims Credit for Walmart Summer Price Rollbacks
President Donald Trump claims Walmart lowered prices on beef and summer staples at his administration's request, though the retailer attributes the cuts to seasonal sales.
President Donald J. Trump announced that Walmart Inc. and Sam's Club reduced prices on thousands of items, including ground beef and soft drinks, at the request of his administration to celebrate the United States' 250th birthday. Trump claimed on Truth Social that the price of ground beef dropped by nearly 15 percent, describing Walmart as a patriotic company and urging other retailers to follow suit.
Walmart's official statements contradict the president's narrative, framing the price cuts as annual summer rollbacks intended to help customers. Reports indicate these discounts were implemented approximately one week before Trump's announcements. Specifically, 73% ground beef rolls were reduced from $6.74 to $5.94 per pound, and 24-packs of Coca-Cola products dropped from $14.97 to $9.97.
These price cuts follow a period of economic tension. The administration previously pressured Walmart to absorb tariff costs, while the company has since applied for an estimated $2.4 billion in tariff refunds following a Supreme Court of the United States ruling that Trump exceeded his authority in establishing those tariffs. Simultaneously, the United States Department of Justice is investigating major meatpacking corporations for potential price collusion amid record-high beef costs driven by drought and fuel price spikes.
