Trump Accounts Launch for Newborns as Expansion Proposal Emerges

The Social Security Administration has begun enrolling newborns in Trump Accounts, while investor Brad Gerstner proposes expanding the tax-advantaged program to all citizens under 40.

The Social Security Administration has started distributing enrollment inserts for Trump Accounts alongside Social Security cards issued to newborns through the Enumeration at Birth program. These accounts provide a one-time $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Department of the Treasury for U.S. citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. Managed by guardians until the child reaches 18, the accounts then transition into traditional retirement accounts.

Donald Trump stated the initiative has nearly 80 million recipients and indicated that a separate version of the account concept for adults is under consideration. Supporting the rollout, Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano noted the agency is providing families with tools to build a strong financial foundation for their children.

Following the launch, investor Brad Gerstner proposed legislation to expand the program to all U.S. citizens under the age of 40. Gerstner argues that expanding the eligibility would create a vessel for employers and philanthropists to contribute to the accounts of young adults. This proposal has gained support from Elon Musk, who announced plans to provide one share of SpaceX stock to every American child through the program. Gerstner is currently working on the legislation, though its viability in Congress remains uncertain.
