Amit Shah Challenges Opposition to Debate Voter Roll Purges
Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged opposition leaders to a parliamentary session to debate allegations of electoral roll manipulation and vote theft.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to a special session of Parliament to debate allegations of vote theft and electoral roll manipulation. Speaking in Lucknow on October 30, 2026, Shah dismissed the claims as baseless and accused the opposition of preferring public demonstrations over structured parliamentary debate, asserting that the government has "nothing to hide."
The dispute centers on the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision, which categorized approximately 13 crore voters as absent, shifted, dead, or duplicate. While the commission maintains the exercise removes ineligible entries, the INDIA bloc alleges partisan conduct and large-scale deletion of eligible voters. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju further challenged the Congress party to explain its consecutive Lok Sabha election losses if the electoral system is as manipulated as the opposition claims.
In response, the opposition has organized a "public impeachment" of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a "Chalo Dilli" rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. Rahul Gandhi characterized the protests as a fight against the "demolition of Indian democracy." Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party has scheduled its own mobilization drive, including a march in Rohtak under the banner 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao'.
