Albanese Launches Australia's UN Security Council Bid in New York

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese formally launched Australia's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-2030 term during the UN General Assembly in New York. Under the slogan "we listen, we partner, we protect," the bid positions Australia as an active middle power focused on conflict prevention, the protection of civilians, and the interests of Pacific nations.

Albanese is leveraging Australia's domestic policies, including a ban on social media for users under 16 and AI guardrails, to argue for a greater voice in global tech governance. He called for a global AI agreement similar to nuclear non-proliferation treaties, contrasting his approach with U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced an "AI force" to maintain American supremacy and has dismissed some AI fears as a "hoax."

During the visit, Albanese appointed Siobhan McKenna, the chair of Australia Post and a former News Corp executive, as the next consul-general in New York. While the appointment drew attention due to McKenna's ties to Lachlan Murdoch, Albanese stated she was appointed on merit.

Domestically, Treasurer Jim Chalmers released the seventh Intergenerational Report, projecting a population slowdown to 39.3 million by 2065-66 due to falling fertility rates. While the political opposition supports the UN bid, Shadow Minister Dan Tehan has called for cost transparency. Australia and Finland are currently the only nominees from the Western Europe and Others Group, with a secret ballot scheduled for mid-2028.
