Mayor Mamdani Launches Probe Into ICE Shooting in Bronx
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is investigating the NYPD and ICE after federal agents shot a man in a moving vehicle in the Bronx.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a city investigation into the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the response of the New York Police Department following a shooting in the Bronx. On Thursday, federal agents shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, a Dominican Republic native, in the neck while he was in a moving vehicle with his five-year-old son.
Authorities identified Belgal as a criminal illegal migrant with a 2023 grand larceny conviction and an August 2025 drug arrest, alleging he has ties to the Trinitarios street gang. The city's probe will specifically examine the 24-hour window surrounding the shooting, the use of a Target parking lot as a staging area, and the management of subsequent protests.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, characterized ICE as a "rogue federal agency" and demanded the agency cease all operations within New York City. The mayor held a two-hour discussion with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, but the meeting ended in a standoff. The federal government maintains that ICE agents acted correctly during the incident.
