Bayeux Tapestry Returns to UK for British Museum Exhibition

The Bayeux tapestry will return to the United Kingdom for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, opening at the British Museum on September 10. The loan is part of a cultural exchange in which the United Kingdom provides treasures from Sutton Hoo in return for the tapestry. The transfer was facilitated by necessary renovations at the Bayeux Museum in Normandy.

Emmanuel Macron and the French government authorized the loan as a symbol of post-Brexit Anglo-French rapprochement. The agreement followed years of political negotiations involving the French president, a British king, and three British prime ministers. Despite an online petition with nearly 80,000 signatures and opposition from some curators, the loan proceeded as a gesture of soft power.

Public interest in the exhibition has been record-breaking, with 80,000 people queuing online for tickets on the first day of sales. The tapestry is scheduled to return to France next year to mark the 1,000th anniversary of William the Conqueror's birth.
