Israeli politicians are utilizing AI-generated content to discredit rivals ahead of the general election scheduled for October 27. The election serves as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his handling of the war in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks.
Research by Ze Be AI indicates that approximately one in eight election-related social media posts are AI-altered. The Likud party accounts for 46% of this content, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has posted AI-generated footage of Palestinian detainees.
To combat misinformation, the Central Elections Committee implemented a law in July requiring AI propaganda to be labeled and conducted wargames with security services, including the Shin Bet. However, regulators report difficulty enforcing these rules due to the rapid adoption of AI and a time-consuming petition process. Security agencies have warned that domestic sources and foreign actors, specifically Iran and Russia, are using AI-turbocharged influence campaigns to delegitimize the democratic process.
