Quebec Premier Warns of U.S. Interference in Provincial Election

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette warned on September 25, 2026, that United States authorities may be attempting to interfere in the October 5 provincial election. Fréchette alleged that U.S. officials tried to negotiate a separate trade deal regarding sensitive sectors, such as aluminum, during the spring. She rejected these overtures to maintain a united front with the federal government.

Fréchette cited a February document from the Defense Analyses and Research Corporation, a U.S.-based think tank, which proposed destabilizing the Canadian federation by supporting the sovereigntist Parti Québécois. While the premier stated there is no proof of actual electoral interference, she has consulted the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and requested a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon denied receiving any foreign assistance and questioned the timing of the leaks. In Ottawa, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated the federal government is taking the matter seriously, though she noted she currently lacks proof of interference.
