Trump Proposes Replacing Undocumented Truckers With Military Veterans

President Donald Trump announced a plan to replace undocumented truck drivers with American veterans by granting them automatic commercial driver's licenses.

President Donald Trump announced a plan during a military investment summit in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to remove undocumented immigrant truck drivers from American roads and replace them with military veterans. Trump pledged that any American who drove heavy trucks during military service would automatically be eligible for a commercial driver's license. He alleged that undocumented drivers pose a threat to public safety, claiming some are unable to read signs or operate vehicles while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Trump linked the initiative to a July 1 fatal crash in Pennsylvania that killed State Police Trooper Michael E. Pahira Jr. The driver, a Haitian immigrant lacking legal authorization to live in the U.S., was identified by the Department of Homeland Security. This proposal follows other enforcement efforts, including the Dalilah Law and Operation Checkmate, the latter of which led to the arrest of dozens of undocumented drivers.

The crackdown is part of a broader immigration sweep in which approximately 200,000 immigrant drivers have lost their licenses since March. This effort is expected to significantly impact an estimated 130,000 to 150,000 drivers of Indian origin from Punjab and Haryana. Simultaneously, reports indicate a surge in the detention and removal of unaccompanied minors, with the Department of Justice overseeing over 10,000 removal or voluntary departure orders for children monthly.

While announcing the policy, Trump also unveiled nearly $10 billion in new Pennsylvania projects for shipbuilding, weapons production, and military technology.
