Ashley Moody and Angie Nixon Secure Florida Senate Nominations
U.S. Senator Ashley Moody and State Representative Angie Nixon won their respective primaries to compete for a Florida Senate seat in November.
Incumbent U.S. Senator Ashley Moody and State Representative Angie Nixon secured their party nominations during Florida primary elections on August 18, 2026. The candidates will compete in a general election on November 3 for a seat vacated by Marco Rubio, who left the Senate to serve as Secretary of State under President Donald Trump.
Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won the Democratic nomination with 55.4% of the vote. She defeated retired Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman, who held a significant fundraising advantage of over $18 million compared to Nixon's estimated $1 million. Nixon ran a grassroots campaign focused on progressive policies, including a national rent freeze and Medicare for All.
Moody, the former Florida attorney general appointed to the seat by Governor Ron DeSantis, defeated three Republican challengers to retain her nomination. Endorsed by Donald Trump, Moody has centered her campaign on her support for law enforcement. The winner of the November election will serve the remaining two years of the term. A Democrat has not won a U.S. Senate seat in Florida since 2012, making the race a long-shot attempt for Democrats to flip control of the Senate.
