Trump Increases Pentagon Budget to $1 Trillion

Donald Trump authorized a $1 trillion Pentagon budget that cuts science and education funding while eliminating military climate and renewable energy programs.

President Donald Trump authorized the One Big Beautiful Act, which increases the Pentagon budget to $1 trillion for 2026. This represents a 17% rise over the previous year, funded through federal spending cuts to Medicaid, education, science, and the National Weather Service.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the termination of renewable energy programs and climate studies within the Department of Defense. Hegseth stated that the agency does not do "climate change crap" and should instead focus on training and warfighting.

Research from the Climate and Community Institute indicates the spending boost will increase military greenhouse gas emissions by 26 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent, totaling 178 megatons. The institute estimates these emissions will result in $47 billion in global economic damages.
