Indian Navy Ships Visit Vietnam to Boost Maritime Security
The Indian Navy deployed two indigenously built warships to Ho Chi Minh City to strengthen defense cooperation under a new strategic partnership with Vietnam.
The Indian Navy deployed the stealth frigate INS Udaygiri and the anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kavaratti to Nha Rong Port in Ho Chi Minh City on June 22, 2026. Commanded by Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, the Eastern Fleet delegation of 610 officers and sailors arrived as part of an operational deployment to Southeast Asia.
This visit represents the first major Indian naval presence in Vietnam since the two nations elevated their bilateral ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2026. The mission follows a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam, where both leaders prioritized defense and security cooperation to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
During the port call, the Indian Navy and the Vietnam People's Navy will conduct professional interactions, cross-deck exchanges, and senior leadership meetings. These activities align with the Joint Vision Statement on India-Vietnam Defence Partnership towards 2030, which focuses on maritime security, systems procurement, and defense technology co-production.
Recent cooperation milestones include Vietnam joining the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and the appointment of a Vietnamese International Liaison Officer at the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region in Gurugram, India.
