Economic Crisis Sparks Widespread Protests Across Iran

A wave of protests has spread across Iran as a severe economic crisis drives the cost of living beyond the reach of millions. Demonstrations involving workers, pensioners, teachers, and unemployed youth have occurred in cities including Tehran, Isfahan, and Ahvaz, with participants demanding wage adjustments, unpaid pensions, and job security. The unrest follows a war involving the United States and Israel that began in February 2026, combined with tighter U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz imposed on April 13.

President Masoud Pezeshkian stated the blockade caused a 35 percent loss in imports and exports. The economic deterioration is marked by a collapsing rial, which reached 233,000 tomans to the dollar on September 10, and food inflation estimated at 130 percent in August 2026. These conditions have disrupted critical supply chains, particularly in the oil sector, and led to skyrocketing costs for food, rent, and fuel.

While the government cites an official unemployment rate of 9 percent, labor leaders and independent data suggest the figure is significantly higher. Jobvision, an Iranian job-seeking portal, reported a 50 percent increase in resume submissions in late April. The Syndicate of University Professors in Iran has threatened to boycott classes starting September 23 if salaries are not raised. Government responses to previous unrest have included internet shutdowns that further damaged tech-based businesses.
