Young Conservatives Reappraise Richard Nixon Through Nixonmaxxing Trend
Conservative activists and MAGA supporters are rebranding Richard Nixon as a counterrevolutionary figure who fought the federal bureaucracy and the deep state.
Young conservatives and members of the MAGA movement have begun a political reappraisal of former President Richard Nixon, a trend they call Nixonmaxxing. Proponents of this view, including activist Christopher Rufo, describe Nixon as a counterrevolutionary who fought against the establishment and the federal bureaucracy.
This modern interpretation emphasizes Nixon's use of tariffs, law-and-order policies, and his claims of being targeted by a deep state, drawing direct parallels to the political style of Donald Trump. Vice President JD Vance has furthered this reassessment by suggesting that the intense polarization of modern politics means the Watergate scandal would not bring down a current presidency, calling such a notion crazy.
Historian Geoffrey Kabaservice argues that Nixon's legacy is more complex than this populist framing. He notes that while Nixon's use of executive power prefigured Trumpism, his creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and efforts to desegregate Southern schools demonstrate a progressive streak. Kabaservice maintains that Nixon's history should instead serve as a reminder of the necessity of the rule of law.
