UN Condemns Myanmar Airstrike as Malaysia Deports Nationals

The United Nations condemned a Monday airstrike by the Military Junta of Myanmar on a market in Kyauktaw township, Rakhine state, which killed at least 50 people and injured 58 others. UN human rights chief Volker Türk described the country as "wracked by extreme violence" and noted that both the military and the Arakan Army have committed abuses against the Rohingya population.

Concurrent with the violence in Rakhine state, Malaysia began implementing a plan to deport approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals. While the Malaysian government claims these repatriations are voluntary, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported it was not involved in identifying the returnees, many of whom are currently held in detention centers.

Volker Türk urged Malaysia to halt the deportation process, stating that conditions in Myanmar are "far from safe and sustainable."
