Vladimir Putin Warns Europe Against Baltic Sea Shipping Restrictions
Vladimir Putin expressed support for restoring ties with Europe while warning that maritime restrictions in the Baltic Sea could lead to a conflict with no winners.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on October 30 that escalating tensions with Europe could lead to a conflict where "there will be no winners at all." Speaking to journalists in Moscow following a summit with African leaders, Putin cautioned against restricting shipping in the Baltic Sea, questioning if European nations wanted a volatile situation similar to the disruptions seen in the Strait of Hormuz following the February outbreak of the US-Iranian conflict.
While asserting that Russia does not seek war with Europe, Putin stated that Moscow is prepared for such a prospect and will respond to any challenge. He framed these warnings alongside a stated desire to restore full-fledged relations with European countries after years of confrontation over the war in Ukraine.
Putin highlighted recent phone calls with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre as evidence that some European leaders wish to establish constructive dialogue rather than inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. Although Stubb and Støre clarified they were speaking only for their respective nations, Putin defended their outreach despite criticism from other European capitals, arguing that such engagement is essential for restoring diplomatic ties.
