Trump Administration Pushes 250-Foot Arch Despite Historic Site Damage

The Donald Trump administration is moving forward with the construction of a 250-foot-tall triumphal arch at Memorial Circle in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. The proposed monument, which features a gold statue of Lady Liberty and four golden lions, is more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial.

The National Park Service has acknowledged that the project will cause unavoidable adverse effects to over 40 historic sites, including Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, by blocking views and disrupting the symbolic visual relationship between these landmarks. Despite these admissions, federal officials maintain that the location is central to the project and have refused to alter the design or location. To mitigate the impact, the agency proposes using vibration plates, limiting noise, and launching educational websites.

The project faces intense opposition from Democratic lawmakers, veterans groups, and preservationists. Vietnam War veterans have filed a lawsuit arguing the arch lacks congressional authorization and obstructs views of the cemetery. Critics, including the Cultural Landscape Foundation, accuse the administration of hostility toward public input and claim the review process violates the National Historic Preservation Act.

While the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission have provided approvals, the administration is now seeking signatures from local preservation officers to expedite final approval by November. Construction is scheduled to begin next week, with reports indicating builders will work 20 hours a day to complete the monument.
