US Leaders Clash Over AI Data Center Energy Surge
US officials and lawmakers are implementing conflicting moratoriums and pledges to manage the strain AI data centers are placing on the national power grid.
The rapid expansion of AI and hyperscale data centers is straining the US power grid, with projected electricity demand rising from 183 terawatt-hours in 2024 to 426 TWh by 2030. This surge has contributed to reliability failures at PJM Interconnection and an increased reliance on fossil fuels, leading Donald Trump to establish the Ratepayer Protection Pledge. This initiative requires AI companies and utilities, such as Duke Energy, to secure new power supplies rather than relying on existing infrastructure to prevent residential rate spikes.
Legislative and regional responses vary sharply. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced a bill for a federal moratorium on AI data centers, citing the need for democratic oversight and the prevention of existential societal harms. At the state and local levels, New York Governor Kathy Hochul imposed a statewide moratorium on large data centers in July 2026, while cities in North Carolina, including Charlotte and Hillsborough, have passed similar local bans.
Opponents of these restrictions, including the NC Chamber of Commerce and officials in Covington, Georgia, argue that data centers provide critical tax revenue and economic growth. Corporate responses are equally diverged; while FirstEnergy reported a 30% increase in data center demand since early 2026, Meta Platforms exited the RE100 renewable initiative and funded at least a dozen natural gas plants. Internationally, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese plans to legally obligate data centers to underwrite new renewable energy supplies.
