Trump Administration Policies Trigger Massive Food Waste and Hunger

Donald Trump's second-term policies on immigration and trade have caused widespread crop rot and the destruction of hundreds of tons of international food aid.

Policies implemented during the second term of Donald Trump have led to systemic food waste and rising hunger within the United States and abroad. Immigration raids conducted by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol displaced essential farmworkers, leaving crops to rot in fields. The United States Department of Labor warned in October 2025 that these aggressive raids risked inducing supply shock-induced food shortages.

Trade tariffs imposed in early 2025 severed soybean trade with China for several months, creating a storage crisis and potential spoilage for American farmers. Internationally, the near-shutdown of the United States Agency for International Development caused 500 tons of high-energy biscuits to expire and be incinerated in a Dubai warehouse, while another 70,000 tons of aid faced potential destruction.

Domestic food insecurity was further exacerbated by a government shutdown that disrupted the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and orders from the United States Department of Agriculture forbidding grocers from offering discounts to SNAP recipients. Additional contributing factors include the mass firing of food safety personnel, the cancellation of local food purchasing programs for schools and food banks, and funding cuts to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster recovery programs for food producers.
