Trump Threatens Cuba as Pentagon Increases Military Planning
President Donald Trump threatened military action against Cuba while the Pentagon increased contingency planning amid a severe energy crisis and rising diplomatic tensions.
The United States Department of Defense has increased contingency planning for potential military operations in Cuba. This escalation follows a broader pressure campaign led by Donald Trump, who has characterized Cuba as a failing nation and suggested the U.S. may stop by the island after concluding military actions in Iran. Trump has publicly contemplated a friendly takeover to remove the Communist Party of Cuba from power, asserting he could do anything he wanted with the nation.
In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared that Cuba is a besieged state facing multidimensional aggression and economic warfare. During rallies marking the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution's socialist essence, Díaz-Canel stated that Cuba would battle and defend itself using irregular warfare under a War of All the People doctrine. The Cuban government has held weekly military drills since January, when a U.S. raid in Caracas captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
This military tension coincides with a severe humanitarian and economic crisis in Cuba, featuring 22-hour daily blackouts and a population decline of over 1.4 million people since 2020. The crisis was exacerbated by a U.S. energy blockade and the disruption of Venezuelan oil supplies. Simultaneously, the United States Department of State accused the Cuban regime of failing to protect its citizens by allowing them to be used as pawns in the Russia-Ukraine war.
